L’UE soutient le Forum UE-Chine sur les malentendus culturels, y compris cette plate-forme numérique. Le Forum est une initiative menée par la Délégation de l’UE en Chine dans le but de contribuer à combler le fossé perceptuel existant sur les concepts clés entre l’Europe et la Chine et de constituer un corpus formel de malentendus conceptuels majeurs dans les relations UE-Chine à travers la conception d’un guide méthodique pour gérer et résoudre ces malentendus.

Le EU-China Partnership Facility (ECPF) est un projet commandité par l’UE. Son objectif est de renforcer la coopération UE-Chine sur un large éventail de questions d’importance mondiale et d’encourager une plus grande convergence entre l’UE et la Chine sur les questions prioritaires, tout en augmentant la sensibilisation aux politiques de l’UE en Chine. L’ECPF soutient le Forum dans la gestion financière, la passation de marchés et les tâches logistiques.

Le Comité directeur

Le Comité directeur est chargé par l’ECPF de développer la stratégie et la méthodologie globales du Forum et de suivre sa mise en œuvre. Il est composé de quatre membres : Dr. Huang Ping et Prof. Zhao TingYang, membres dirigeants de l’Académie chinoise des sciences sociales (CASS) ainsi que Dr. Alain Le Pichon, anthropologue français et co-fondateur de Transcultura et Prof. Tinka Reichmann, professeur de sciences de la traduction à l’Université de Leipzig. Les autres tâches du comité directeur comprennent la sélection de mots-clés pour le dictionnaire des malentendus UE-Chine, la sélection et l’orientation des auteurs et la définition des programmes et des objectifs des événements.

Organisations associées

L’institut international Transcultura a été créé par Umberto Eco et Alain le Pichon en 1988 à l’occasion du 900e anniversaire de l’Université de Bologne. Association française reconnue d’utilité publique, Transcultura a pour mission de promouvoir l’anthropologie réciproque afin de renouveler le champ conceptuel des sciences humaines, encore limité par le contexte des cultures occidentales. Transcultura est ainsi à l’origine du projet de « Dictionnaire des malentendus » entre la Chine et l’Europe.

Cent Mille Milliards

Cent Mille Milliards publie une dizaine de titres par an dans tous les domaines, la fiction (romans, récits…) comme les essais (politique, entreprise, société…). Éditeur de son temps, Cent Mille Milliards s’appuie sur les nouvelles technologies pour apporter les contenus à leurs publics. Les livres sont imprimés à la demande et la livraison est réalisée en 48h par Hachette Livre Distribution. C’est la meilleure façon de répondre aux défis qu’impose ce début de 21e siècle et un atout essentiel pour la protection de l’environnement en diminuant l’empreinte carbone. Cent Mille Milliards a été mandaté par l’ECPF pour héberger cette plateforme pour faciliter les échanges entre les auteurs en vue du Forum.

Mutual understanding is the foundation of international relations. If globalization leads us to use a common lexicon, we often tend to forget that meanings differ from one culture to the other. Lack of understanding or, sometimes, confusion in meaning, breaks communication.

When China speaks in a foreign language, it uses a lexicon that is more often than never not on par with its own history and culture. It uses words to which it may assign, consciously or unconsciously, different meanings. No dialogue can be effective if interlocutors disagree on the very meaning of what they say to each other.

More than 2000 years ago, Confucius noted the imperative “to assign proper meanings to concepts”, zheng ming 正名. That is precisely what this digital platform offers by attempting to bridge the gap of cultural differences, while respecting the essential value of cultural diversity without falling in the trap of cultural relativism. This initiative aims thus to confront key concepts between Europe and China by designing a methodical guide to handle and solve eventual misunderstandings.

Remarkably, the origin of this project stems back to the 1980’s when a number of dialogues contributed to create a trustworthy network of scholars in Europe and in China. With the renewed support of the European Union, the ‘EU-China Forum on Cultural Misunderstandings’ gathers a group of high level European and Chinese intellectuals who share the awareness that cultural misunderstandings impede mutual comprehension and positive interactions between the EU and China at all levels.

The digital platform ambitions to be a constant, accessible and tangible instrument for uploading contributions and conducting initial debates in preparation of the November 2021 Forum.

The contributions of all participating authors will be included in the EU-China Dictionary of Misunderstandings, published digitally and eventually also in a physical form. It intends to be a meaningful, scientific and literate instrument for the benefit of mutual understanding between Europe and China.

It is certainly my hope that this editorial project of a Europe-China Dictionary of Misunderstandings may constitute a reference tool for further research and exchanges.
